Saw these guys last week in Germany and they kicked major ass!
For those unaware, Imperial State Electric are the new (well, not so new these days actually, this is their third album) project from former Hellacopters frontman Nicke Andersson. And it’s fair to say, the music they offer is pretty much a straight-up continuation of the heads-down no-frills rock ‘n’ roll that the Hellacopters did so well for over a decade. Which, on the evidence of “Reptile Brain Music”, probably their strongest effort to date, is no bad thing. Essentially this is 30 minutes of tight as you like garage rock which oozes riffs by the bucketload. Opening with the anti-capitalist heads-down blast of “Emptiness Into The Void”, it’s business asusual for ISE here and y’know what? If it ain’t broke, why fix it? Rapid-fire tunes like “Faustian Bargains”, “More Than Enough Of Your Love” and “Apologise” zip past so fast you can hardly blink, simple two minute fat-free “get in there, say what you’ve got to say and get the hell out again” bursts of enjoyment while the creepy-crawly “Dead Things” and “Stay The Night” evoke the spirit of early Alice Cooper (think “Is It My Body?” or “You Drive Me Nervous”) and are all the better for it. Purerawk review.
