This eighteen song set is a rollicking tour through Nick Lowe's assorted demos, B-sides and unreleased songs. He has defined his wilderness years as 1974-1977, the period between the demise of his band Brinsley Schwartz and his emergence as a solo artist on Stiff Records. Where his later work shows Lowe to be comfortably wearing a heart on his sleeve, these songs find him most often with his tongue happily in his cheek (it even includes his cover of "Born A Woman", which he played as an all-out rocker, all but free of any overt irony). "Endless Sleep" is played about as slow as a song can be played without coming to a complete stop. "Shake That Rat" shows his penchant for taking the world's simplest component parts and fashioning a highly durable rocking instrumental. "I Love My Label" is his jingle of devotion to the much-loved independent Stiff label.
