1.For the viewers of this blog who would not know you, What would you tell about MÄSH to introduce yourselves? How long are you guys together as a band? Who is playing what instrument in the band nowadays?
Mäsh is a Rock´n´Roll band from Berlin, We started in late 2018, Marcos on vocals, Hector on Bass, Stevo on lead guitar and Gallo on rhythm guitar since the beginning TV joined on drums short after our first LP came out and not much later Gabriele took over lead guitar when Stevo moved back to Rome .
2.What can you tell about the recording process of your album "COMPLICATION"? Was this a "live" in the studio recording or a track by track recording with lots of overdubs?
We recorded "Complication" live and fully analog on tape with Smail at Shock Productions in just four days. It was an incredible experience, using old gear like Vox, Fender, and Marshall amps from the '60s and '70s. For Beale Street, we played a 12-string Rickenbacker guitar, while the intro to Tsunami was played with a '40s blues guitar from Smail.Gab used another old Rickenbacker for some of his solos, along with a bunch of other great gear Smail had in the studio. Recording without a laptop and using a mixer from an old DDR-era radio was a lotta fun!
It’s very important to us to achieve that classic, analog sound. We don’t want to sound modern or digital, and Smail is definitely the guy to go for that kinda sound.
We didn’t need many overdubs, and since we were recording on tape, we also avoided going overboard with layers or adding elements we couldn’t replicate live. For us, it’s all about sounding as close to our live as possible.
3.For the recording of that album did you use the modern digital recording technology or do you guys only work with analog machines in analog studios?
As I mention before we always want to record on tape using as least modern tech as possible, We don´t find the point of playing this kind of music and sounding modern.
4.Is there a main composer in the band or is everybody involved in one way or another?Marcos, Hector and Gab mostly bring the main ideas of the music and Marcos writes the lyrics and melody of the songs and then we all put the stuff together, modify it, fix it or sometimes trash it democratically ! I think we are very straight forward when something doesn´t work and that's a very important part of writing songs, you write 10 bad ones to get one decent song.
5.What is your favorite topic/topic that comes easily when you write a new song?
Most of our lyrics are about real things that happened to us, feelings, love, heartache, or just friendship and fun, with a bit of satire. We don’t get too much into serious topics, even though some of our songs are more political. In the end, we just want to have fun playing music and forget about the crazy world we’re living in.
6.When I listen to your record it reminds me of Eddie and The Hot Rods, that I was fortunate enough to see live after the release of their "Teenage Depression" album. That was quite a blast. So this brings me to the following question: To what kind of music did you listen to as teenagers and does it still influence your today work? Name 3 bands that you consider still have a influence on your own work today.
The idea behind forming the band was purely for fun and to play the music we love, trying to recreate the same sound we heard on Rock ’n’ Roll records from the ’50s to the late ’70s.
We’re influenced by everything from early Blues and Rock ’n’ Roll to the British Invasion, Soul, Glam Rock, Power Pop, Pub Rock, and early Punk Rock—where you could still hear a 12-bar in every other song. “Eddie” has been a huge influence on our music. If we had to pick two other bands we listened to a lot as teens, it would probably be The Beatles and The Ramones. Even though our musical tastes have grown over the years, they’re still very much present in our sound.
7.Do you have a video on youtube featuring a track from the recent LP??
We’re working on it and hope to have something ready soon!
8.What can concert goers expect at a gig of MÄSH? Are you playing any "famous" cover songs?
We always try to play a full set without breaks and no encores—fast, loud, and giving all we have on stage. At the moment, we play Teenage News by Sylvain Sylvain, and in the past, we used to cover Bad Boy by The Equals, Suffragette City by Bowie, and I Can’t Explain by The Who.
9.Are there any bands in Germany today you consider yourself close to?
Musically, we can’t really mention any band at the moment that we think we sound similar to. Sometimes, people compare us to certain bands but I guess we’re all drinking from the same source, and the result might sound similar to some people.
10.What are the plans for 2025 as far as MÄSH are concerned? Are you gonna tour Europe to promote the record?
Since Marcos recently moved to Spain and had a baby, we took a little break, but we’re getting ready to start touring again in 2025! We’re very excited to get back on track!
11.Anything you wanna add?
We truly appreciate your effort and passion for music and for supporting underground Rock ’n’ Roll bands. Thank you so much!
